Copper Raster Bars in Tony? Coloring the Amiga Game

I’m coming back to the topic and the fun of coloring graphics using Copper in the Amiga. Today I took graphics from the recently released, great game Tony (Amiga version).

The graphics in the game are, as we know, monochromatic, and I thought about how they might look like if they were colored with copper.
And to put an end to cut the speculation off… I have no intention of improving the graphics in this game or in any way criticizing or insinuating anything to the graphic designer of Tony’s gfx. He did a great job and I think I understand his passion for monochromatic graphics and artistic decisions. However, I thought that graphics from Tony would be a perfect way to practice my approach and my technique of creating graphics on the Amiga with copper raster bars.
I’d say that the potential is great and the graphics look good in my opinion. It’s colorful and it doesn’t take up much more memory space. Who knows, maybe I will inspire the creators of Tony to make further versions of the game 😉 Either way, the graphics could look more or less like this: (click to enlarge)

Please take a look at the first two pics. It’s actually the same pic with different coloring. Notice how easy it is to change a mood of the pic by just using different raster bars.

As for technical aspects, if I count correctly, each line with in the copper list looks like this:

dc.w $xx07,$fffe, $180,$xxx, $182, $yyy

and something like that repeated as many times as there’s lines in the screen. In Tony it is 200 lines, so: 200 * 12 bytes = 2400 bytes. Just over 2 kB extra for the screen. I’d say it’s not that bad.

Okay, but how to create it?
Patience. Soon I should record a video in which I will reveal a bit about my process.

In the meantime you can check the previous attempts: here and here and follow the discussion on ppa.pl Polish Amiga forum.
